AR Rahman’s music and the banner of Dharma Productions always has something refreshing and delightful lined up for the silver screen on the Blockbuster Friday. Set to be Bollywood’s first big release of 2017, Ok Jaanu was quite busy setting trends right from its trailer launch and increasingly popular songs. Featuring the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, the film brings under the spotlight the candid city of Mumbai and a very ordinary love story marinated with cheesy dialogues and powerful music.

Shot across Mumbai and parts of Ahmedabad, the film kicks off introducing a young techie and an aspiring architect, Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, respectively, who meet in the most strangest of circumstances on the Mumbai railway station. As the reel roles, we get to see the lead pair cast their Aashiqui spell once again making the film adorable and entertaining. The train gathers pace, the amazing love story with a romantic Mumbai in the background keeps you intrigued. But, what is a journey and a Bollywood film without some unwanted juvinile scenes and dialogues. One cannot question the class of Gulzaar, but there are times where dialogues and catch phrases get too cheesy and immature, hence spoiling the sparkle and entertainment of the perfect film-rail journey.

Moving on to the contributors from behind the camera, director Shaad Ali brings back his magic after horrifying us to death with Kill Dill. Shaad Ali, the guy who gave us cult romantic classics like Bunty Aur Babli and Saathiya makes Ok Jaanu look, cool and adorable. The cinematography and the camera department under the able guidance of Fimfare winner Ravi K. Chandran is beautiful. The film not only paints Mumbai with ‘desi romance’ but also ensures the perfect camera angles and locations for almost every scene.

The acting class is formidable. The Aditya-Shraddha pair is lovely and is graced with the class and absorbing performances of Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson, making sure you do fall for the film. With almost every station and stop giving you something to capture and relish, AR Rahman’s music collection is the perfect icing to the cake. Right from the title track and ‘The Humma song’ the film is well clad with romantic and soothing numbers.ok-jaanu-hd-trailer-still-feat-naseeruddin-shah

Ok Jaanu, keeps its whimsical momentum throughout the 140 minute journey. Despite being a remake and presenting a very ordinary love story Ok Jaanu surprisingly looks refreshing and enjoyable, being the perfect start for Bollywood in 2017. The film is good value for money and definitely sets you in the mood you would like to end your journey.

The Cinema Station’s Rating: Second AC Journey
